Basic protective measures against the coronavirus

  • Wash your hands frequently

  • Maintain social distancing

  • Stay at home

  • Observe self isolation strictly where required.

  • If you have fever or a cough or difficulty breathing, phone 111.

  • DO NOT COME TO THE SURGERY

Social distancing

Public Health Isle of Man advice is that social distancing is especially important for those who are aged 70 or over or pregnant or fall into one of the following categories:

  • under 70 with an underlying health condition listed below (ie anyone instructed to get a flu jab as an adult each year on medical grounds):
  • chronic (long-term) respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or bronchitis
  • chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
  • chronic kidney disease
  • chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis
  • chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), a learning disability or cerebral palsy
  • diabetes
  • spleen problems – for example, those with sickle cell disease or have had their spleen removed
  • a weakened immune system as the result of conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or medicines such as steroid tablets or chemotherapy
  • being seriously overweight (a body mass index of 40 or above)

People in these groups are not currently placed under any restriction, but are advised to consider changing their behaviour straight away.

If someone is attending a club or group, for example, they should ask themselves whether that is the right thing to be doing at the current time.

Social distancing for vulnerable groups

If you believe you are in any of the categories mentioned below please contact the surgery by email on laxeyonchan@gov.im to arrange a sick note if required.

If you are classed as very vulnerable because you are in one of the following groups:

  • people who have received an organ transplant and remain on ongoing immunosuppression medication
  • people with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • people with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia who are at any stage of treatment
  • people with severe chest conditions such as cystic fibrosis or severe asthma (requiring hospital admissions or courses of steroid tablets)
  • people with severe diseases of body systems, such as severe kidney disease (dialysis)

You are strongly advised to self-isolate for the next 12 WEEKS and avoid all face to face contact.

Visits from people who provide essential support to you such as healthcare, personal support with your daily needs or social care should continue, but carers and care workers must stay away if they have any of the symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). All people coming to your home should wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds on arrival to your house and often whilst they are there.
